Esner signs with AHL's Peoria Rivermen

Northeastern University senior Bryan Esner has signed a professional tryout contract with the Peoria Rivermen, the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues located in Peoria, Ill. He is the first Husky to sign a pro contract this season.

Esner finished his senior season on a tear, with four goals and three assists for seven points in Northeastern’s final five regular season games. On the season, he scored eight goals and added five assists while playing all 36 games. In 131 games over four seasons, he scored 18 goals and had 27 assists for 45 points.

The Paradise Valley, Ariz., native's specialty is the penalty kill, where he uses his speed to create short-handed opportunities on nearly every shift. Esner scored six short-handed goals in his collegiate career, which ranks No. 2 in the Northeastern record books. He scored four short-handed goals in 2006-07. At the conclusion of the regular season, Northeastern ranked fourth in the nation in penalty kill.

The Huskies finished the season with a 13-18-5 overall record and a 9-13-5 record in Hockey East. It was a 10-win improvement overall and a league-best six-win improvement in Hockey East.
