Harry Mews, a native of Nepean, Ontario, has been elected to the Northeastern University Hall of Fame for excellence in the sport of hockey. Mews, Class of 1991, will be inducted along with six others in formal cermonies at Lombardo’s Restaurant in Randolph, Mass., on April 18.
Mews was a star on the 1987-88 team that is arguably the finest in the Huskies’ 75 years of collegiate play. He had been the star of the Nepean Raiders when they won the coveted Molson Cup of the Central Junior League in 1986. He was recruited by Western Michigan and Ohio State but chose the Huskies.
A preseason injury delayed his debut for five games, but he scored on the first shot of his career as a freshman in 1986-87. The team finished at 12-21-3 overall and was 11-21-1 in Hockey East. Mews scored 10 goals with 15 assists for 25 points in only 29 games.
In his sophomore season, Mews centered a line with veterans Rico Rossi and Dave Buda. He played in all 37 games as the Huskies won the Beanpot and the Hockey East Championship, and made the NCAA Tournament. He was third on the team in scoring with 16 goals, including two game-winners, and 23 assists for 39 points. The team finished 20-13-4 and 13-9-4 in Hockey East play. In the Beanpot, Mews had two goals and two assists as NU beat BC 4-0 and BU 6-3. In the Hockey East Championship, he was voted to the All-Tournament team.
In his junior season, the Huskies went 18-16-3 overall and 13-11-2 in the league. They made the playoffs, and advanced to the Hockey East semifinals. Mews led the team in scoring with 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points. For his efforts, he was voted All-Hockey East.
In his senior season, Mews scored 20 goals and had 39 assists for a total of 59 points. The 59 points are ninth-best in a season the Husky record book and the 39 assists tied for second in a season. He was once again voted All-Hockey East. The team finished 16-19-2 overall and 9-10-2 in the league.
Mews finished his career playing 133 games, scoring 64 goals and getting 101 assists for 165 points. He moved into sixth place on the all-time scoring list, and was only the fifth Husky to notch more than 100 assists.
Mews was drafted by the Washington Capitals and played several years for the Baltimore Shipjacks and the Hampton Roads Admirals. He both captained and served as a player/assistant coach as the Admirals won ECHL titles in 1991 and 1992.
He is currently the General Sales Manager for Myers Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Cadillac, and still resides in his hometown of Nepean, Ontario.
Joining Mews in NU’s Hall of Fame Class of 2008 will be Vincent Barletta (rowing), Anders Hoeyem (soccer), Roger Pierce (track & field), Nikiya Reid (women’s track & field), Brooke Whitney (women’s ice hockey) and Kelly Wilk (field hockey).
