Boston, MA

Northeastern University has announced its 2008-09 men's ice hockey schedule. The Huskies, who went 16-18-3 overall and 12-13-2 in Hockey East in 2007-08, begin the season with the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska on Oct. 10 against Alaska Fairbanks and play Alaska Anchorage the following night.

Northeastern begins its Hockey East slate on Oct. 17 when it plays Providence College at Schneider Arena. Northeastern's first home game is Oct. 18 on Homecoming Weekend against defending national champion Boston College. The Huskies beat the Eagles twice in overtime last season before the Eagles went on to win the NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame. NU plays a home-and-home series with Boston College to finish the regular season March 6-7.

Northeastern plays in two holiday tournaments - the RPI Holiday Tournament Nov. 28-29 and the Dodge Holiday Classic Jan. 2-3. The Huskies play Princeton in the first round at RPI on Nov. 28 and either Mercyhurst or RPI in the second round. NU takes on Western Michigan in the opener of the Dodge Holiday Classic and Brown or Minnesota the next day. Northeastern has just one non-conference game that isn't part of a tournament, a road game against Brown at Meehan Auditorium on Dec. 6, one night after playing Maine at Matthews Arena.

The Huskies play 16 of their 27 Hockey East games after New Year's, including a two-game series with Vermont at Matthews Arena Jan. 16-17 and a home-and-home series against Boston University Feb. 20-21. The Hockey East schedule will be broken up only by the 57th annual Beanpot Tournament the first two Mondays of February. The Huskies play Boston College in the first round of the Beanpot on Feb. 2 and the final against Boston University or Harvard is slated a week later at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The Hockey East Tournament begins with a three-game quarterfinal series starting either March 12 or 13 at the higher seed's home rink. The semifinals and finals are March 20-21 at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Northeastern will look to continue its improvement under head coach Greg Cronin, who will begin his fourth season at NU in October. Over the last three seasons, Northeastern has improved from 3-24-7 to 13-18-5 to 16-18-3. The Huskies' 16 wins last season were the team's most since 2001-02 and the Huskies won their first playoff game since 2002. NU loses just two players from last season while adding six recruits.
