Anders Hoyem had this direct kick late in the game for the Huskies, but it missed high over the net

AMERICA EAST SEMIFINALS
Freshman Stephen Althoff scored just 1:33 into overtime to give Hofstra a 1-0 win over Northeastern in the first ever America East playoff game at Parsons Field. The semifinal win gives fourth-seeded Hofstra a berth in next week's championship, which will be played at either Vermont or Towson. UVM and Towson meet Sunday in a semifinal game.

NU was the top seed in the tournament for the first time ever, but lost when Althoff gathered up a loose ball off a throw-in from another freshman, Rishi Matadeen. Althoff blasted the ball into the open net from right in front. NU was looking to advance to the championship game for just the second time in its history.

Locked in a defensive struggle, the Huskies and Flying Dutchmen were forced into the sudden death OT period. NU had eight shots in regulation, Hofstra six. Ben Collins had a shot that narrowly missed the net in the 65th minute. Anders Hoyem then had a direct kick from just about 25 yards out for the Huskies in the 83rd minute, but his bid sailed high over the net. Hoyem was awarded the kick when Hofstra keeper Andrew Brooke was whistled for a handball outside the box.

Hofstra's best chance of the second half came when Patrick Geraghty's blast from the left side was stopped at the post by NU keeper Allan Lewis in the 57th minute.

The teams played a scoreless first half. The half was even throughout with NU getting off four shots and Hofstra three. NU had its best chance to score as Phonethip Ketnouvong broke through a crowd and fired a shot wide in the 17th minute. Ketnouvong later had two more shots that went wide. Petter Starnas also had a chance, coming in the 23rd minute, as he had beaten a defender but could not control the bouncing ball in front of Hofstra keeper Brooke.

The Flying Dutchmen's Aboubacar Camara broke away and had only Oumar Thiam to beat in the 25th minute, but Thiam stole the ball and started the action the other way.

NU, which also lost in overtime to Hofstra on Oct. 1, ends its season with a record of 10-8.

  • The game started at 12:08 p.m. Game time temperature was 59 degrees under cloudy skies.

  • On Friday, NU head coach Ed Matz was named America East Co-Coach of the Year. Anders Hoyem earned first team All-Conference honors and Petter Starnas made the second team. Oumar Thiam was named to the All-Rookie team.
