| The Northeastern men’s soccer team used an aggressive first half of play and strong second half defense to defeat West Virginia, 2-1, at Parsons Field on Friday night.
The Huskies took advantage of an early foul by the Mountaineers to get on the board in the first half. Senior co-captain Atha Kirkopoulos’ direct kick from just outside of the box was deflected in front of the net, setting up freshman Daniel Ivec, who made a move down low before burying the shot for a 1-0 lead at the 5:57 mark.
In the 42nd minute, Northeastern struck again. Junior Andrew Hickey made two nice moves in front of the net, and followed with a perfect pass to junior Michael Cipriano’s foot, who put a low blast to the left corner of the net for a two-goal advantage heading into the break.
In the second half, WVU came out with intensity, forcing NU goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio to make some key saves early on to preserve the lead. The Mountaineers finally caught their break in 70th minute, though, as a foul by the Huskies inside the box gave West Virginia a penalty kick. Junior Aaron Pitchkolan converted on the kick, making it a one-goal game.
Saccoccio was able to shut down the Mountaineers the rest of the way with a few more big saves, including one in the final seconds to hold on to the win. West Virginia outshot Northeastern, 12-10. Saccoccio posted six saves for the Huskies to pick up his fourth win of the season, while the Mountaineers recorded one team save.
The Huskies, who improve to 4-4-2 overall and stand at 1-1-1 in the conference, are back in action on Sunday when they host America East rival Stony Brook at 3:30 p.m.
