After being ranked No. 16 in the nation this week by the NSCAA/adidas men's soccer poll, the Huskies were upset by Rhode Island at the URI Soccer Complex, 3-0, on Saturday.
Senior forward Perek Belleh led the way for the Rams with two goals, including the game-winner, giving the team its first win of the season while improving to 1-2 overall. Notheastern picked up its first loss of the season, dropping to 1-1 overall.
The Huskies hurt themselves early in the first half when a foul inside the box giving a penalty kick to Belleh, who converted to give URI a 1-0 lead at the 15:40 mark. Belleh would notch his second after a feed from junior Sasha Gotsmanov allowed him to get past one NU defender and have a clear lane to beat goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio for a goal at 32:05.
Northeastern received a blow in the 63rd minute when defender Joe Parrish picked up his second yellow card of the game, forcing the Huskies to play a man down. Rhode Island capitalized on the advantage, putting the game away when freshman Joe Spofford scored the Rams' third goal at the 83:31 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Michael Charles picked up two saves in the shutout win for Rhode Island, while Saccoccio posted six stops in the losing effort. URI outshot NU, 14-3, and both teams combined for 37 fouls in the match, including eight yellow cards and a red card.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Binghamton for their first conference match of the season at 4 p.m.
