| The Northeastern men’s soccer team remained alive with its second upset win of the America East Championships, as the Huskies went on to defeat No. 1 seed UMBC, 1-0, in the semifinal round at the UMBC Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Tom Heimreid couldn’t have picked a better time to notch his first goal of the 2003 season, scoring the game-winner at the 10:20 mark to help lead NU to its third straight America East title game. Senior co-captain Atha Kirkopoulos set the goal up, sending a corner kick to the foot of Heimreid, who sent a shot to the upper right corner of the net.
The goal was not the first scoring chance of the game for Northeastern. Five minutes into the first half, Kirkopoulos scored off a free kick on what looked to be a legitimate goal. After some confusion on the field, it was determined that the kick was indirect, keeping the game scoreless.
The first half played out evenly, as the Retrievers held a slim advantage in shots, 3-2. UMBC turned it up in the second half though, outshooting the Huskies 8-3. Sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio stepped it up in net for the Huskies, posting four saves to hold the Retrievers scoreless down the stretch. Saccoccio has posted shutouts in both playoff games this postseason, and has now recorded eight on the season. UMBC keeper Andy Marchica had two saves in the loss.
Northeastern improves to 10-7-3 overall this season while the Retrievers end the year at 10-3-5 overall. With No. 2 Binghamton defeating No. 3 Hartford, 1-0, in the other semifinal match on Saturday, NU will now try to defend its America East crown next Saturday, Nov. 15, against the Bearcats at 1 p.m. on West Gym Field in Vestal, N.Y
