| Senior midfielder Atha Kirkopoulos picked up his first goal of the season on Tuesday, and it couldn't have come at a better time, as the converted penalty kick in the 64th minute proved to be the gamewinner for the Northeastern men's soccer team, which knocked off America East rival Binghamton on the road in its conference opener, 2-1.
The goal came just 3:37 after junior Michael Cipriano's pass set up freshman Daniel Ivec for his first collegiate goal on a shot from the edge of the penalty box. With the win, NU improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in America East play, while the Bearcats drop to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Holding a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute, a Huskies' foul in the box led to a converted penalty kick from sophomore Graham Munro, cutting the lead to one.
The pressure turned to NU goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio, who stepped up and played strongly in the final 20 minutes of play to preserve the win. Saccoccio finished the game with seven saves, while Bearcat goalkeeper Stefan Gonet posted three saves in the losing effort. Binghamton outshot Northeastern, 10-7.
The Huskies return to action this weekend when they travel to Denver for the John Byrden Classic. Northeastern will play Denver on Friday at 4 p.m. MST, and takes on Air Force on Sunday at 11 a.m. MST. Northeastern Binghamton
