| After a first half dominated by the Northeastern men's soccer team, sophomore Jay Betley's goal with 15 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner in a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac on Thursday at Parsons Field.
Betley was able to elude two defenders before making a nice crossover to his left foot, sending a low blast past Bobcat goaltender Cory Shilcock-Elliott for a 1-0 lead. The Huskies had complete control in the first, outshooting Quinnipiac 17-1 and putting 14 shots on goal. Shilcock-Elliott was forced to make some spectacular saves to keep the game close, finishing the half with 13 total.
Both squads played even early in the second half as the game took a noticeable change of pace. The Huskies showed signs of energy later in the second half, though, as freshman Daniel Ivec deflected in a shot off an Atha Kirkopoulos corner, giving NU the 2-0 advantage.
Northeastern would get a number of good scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of play, especially from junior Michael Cipriano, who was held scoreless on key saves by Shilcock-Elliot. The Huskies would add one more goal to ensure the win when a turnover in the Quinnipiac zone allowed junior Andrew Hickey to come in all alone and put one past the keeper for the breakaway goal.
NU outshot the Bobcats, 28-5, putting 23 of the shots on goal. Shilcock-Elliott played an excellent game in net, posting 20 saves in the loss. Northeastern goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio recorded two saves to pick up his second shutout win of the season.
The Huskies play again on Saturday when they travel to Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. Quinnipiac Northeastern
