| The men’s soccer team played conference rival UMBC to a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon at Parsons Field.
The Huskies held a one-goal lead into the 86th minute, but came away with the tie when UMBC’s Derek McElligott slipped a shot past goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio to knot the game.
Northeastern jumped out to the early lead when Daniel Ivec made a nice pass up the center to Michael Cipriano, who put a shot past the hard-charging UMBC goalkeeper at the 9:32 mark.
NU would hold onto the lead until the 62nd minute, when McElligott put the Retrievers on the board with a diving header on a cross from Danny Mongello, tying the game at 1-1.
In the 75th minute though, Northeastern would again take the lead when senior co-captain Atha Kirkopoulos’ direct kick wrapped around the goalkeeper and off the post before finding its way into the net and giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead. McElligott’s second goal of the game would tie it before both teams played a scoreless overtime.
The Retrievers had a slim advantage in shots at 12-11. Both Saccoccio and UMBC goalkeeper Andy Marchica posted three saves on the day. The Huskies now stand at 3-4-2 overall, and 1-1-1 in America East play. UMBC moves to 4-1-3 on the season and 0-0-1 in the conference after its first game in the America East.
Northeastern returns to action on Friday when they host West Virginia at 6 p.m. on Parsons Field.
