Northeastern tied Towson 1-1 on Sunday afternoon remaining undefeated in CAA play with a 0-0-4 record. This was NU’s fourth consecutive tie. Sophomore Greg Kilkenny scored the lone Husky goal, his fourth of the year.
The Huskies put pressure on Towson the entire first half giving the Tigers few chances to get in a groove. Kilkenny put the Huskies up one in the 30th minute when junior Daryl Brack hit Kilkenny with a through 20 yards out. Towson keeper Zak Thompson came out of the net and Kilkenny shot it right by him.
A few minutes later Kilkenny had another chance to add on, but Thompson saved his first shot and Kilkenny missed wide on the rebound. Freshman Ben Levy had multiple crosses to Kilkenny later in the half that weren’t finished off.
Towson came out the second half out shooting the Huskies 5-4. In the 66th minute, freshman Cesar Cisneros cleaned up his own rebound of a tough Sergio Saccoccio save to even the score at one.
Around the 80th minute, Kilkenny had an opportunity to score but couldn’t control the pass and Towson’s Thompson grabbed the ball before Kilkenny could shoot. Minutes later, sophomore Angus Burke rifled a shot that was saved by Saccoccio.
In the overtimes, both team had few chances to develop a scoring opportunity.
Saccoccio made five saves moving him four away from becoming Northeastern’s career saves leader. Former keeper Andrew Boyea (1992-96) holds the record with 290 saves.
Three yellow cards were issued to Towson’s Sebastian Haensel, Andrew Marshall and NU’s Tom Heimreid. Both teams combined for 31 fouls.
Northeastern travels down south to Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 14 to take on the No. 3 ranked Monarchs.
