The men's soccer team dropped its first game of the season on Friday night to Providence College, 1-0. Junior Matt O'Donnell capitalized on a cross from freshman Issam Sawtarie at 29:33 of the first half to give the Friars the lead for good. The Huskies fell to 2-1 this season and 1-10 all-time against the Friars.

After a slow start for both teams, Northeastern picked up the pace and had several chances to take an early lead. At the seven minute mark, junior striker Greg Kilkenny received a long lead pass into the box but was met by PC senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka, who grabbed the close range shot. Kilkenny had another opportunity to score on a cross from junior Ahmed Talaat almost 12 minutes later, but the Friars' defense forced another low percentage shot.

Still without a shot on goal late in the half, Issam Sawtarie ran down the middle of the field and crossed the ball to Matt O'Donnell, who put home the Friars' game-winning goal at the 30 minute mark. Sawtarie almost doubled PC's lead just a few minutes later but his attempt went wide right, and the Friars took a 1-0 lead into the second half despite being outshot 7-3.

Providence controlled play for much of the second frame, grasping to its one goal lead. But with less than 10 minutes to play, the Huskies created several quality scoring chances. In the 82nd minute, senior co-captain Daryl Brack found some open space in the middle of the field and drilled a long shot toward the Providence net, but the shot hit the bottom half of the crossbar and fell in front of the goal. Two minutes later, Kilkenny was awarded a free kick from 15 yards out but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Brack got one last opportunity to tie the score in the final minute, but Konopka made a leaping save to seal the victory for Providence.

Konopka made six saves in the win, while freshman Mahmoud Talaat turned aside four shots in his first collegiate loss.

Northeastern outshot Providence 13-10 and finished with a 8-3 advantage on corners.

The Huskies will conclude a busy three-game week as they travel to Providence, R.I. on Sunday to face Brown University at Stevenson Field. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
