The men’s soccer team (3-9-2, 1-4-1 CAA) held on for a 2-1 victory against Georgia State (1-11-0, 1-5-0 CAA) at Silverbacks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It was the first CAA win for the Huskies, who had not won since Aug. 29 at Maine. Junior Greg Kilkenny scored just eight minutes into the game and junior Ahmed Talaat added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. With the win, NU became the last CAA team to pick up a conference victory.

Greg Kilkenny has been instrumental in the Huskies’ recent success, and he proved it again on Sunday afternoon. After receiving a pass over the defense from sophomore Nicholas Patrikis, Kilkenny put the ball over GSU keeper Filipe Carvalho for his fourth goal of the season and an early 1-0 Northeastern advantage. The goal also marked the third straight contest that Kilkenny has opened the scoring. He scored in the 16th minute against UNC Wilmington and the 14th minute against William & Mary in the last two games. However, the Huskies relinquishing those early leads and eventually tied W&M and lost to UNC Wilmington.

Ahmed Talaat made sure the Huskies would not let their early lead slip away this time. At 61:32, the junior capitalized as Carvalho was out of the net. It was Talaat’s third goal of the season.

Georgia State managed to score at 83:45, as Floreal Pedrazo scored on a pass from Martin Zaluk, but it was not enough and the Huskies escaped with the win.

Georgia State outshot NU 13-10. The two teams had six corner kicks each.

Filipe Carvalho made five stops in the loss, while freshman Mahmoud Talaat also made five saves for the Huskies.

Northeastern returns home to Parsons Field for a three game road trip, beginning on Fri., Oct. 13, as the Huskies host Virginia Commonwealth at 6 p.m. NU will also host James Madison next weekend on Sun., Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
