Greg Kilkenny had three assists as the men’s soccer team exploded for four goals in a convincing win over Maine in the home opener on Sunday at Parsons field. Northeastern earned its first win of the season after being held scoreless in its previous three games.

In the 10th minute Kilkenny sent a corner shot from the left that senior forward Ahmed Talaat headed in for the first tally. Kilkenny then led sophomore midfielder Matthew Laning with a nice pass in traffic that he put in for the goal, to give NU a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second half the Huskies didn’t let up. Kilkenny recorded his third assist when he fired a free kick into the box from about 30 yards out that senior defender Padraig Tangney found and headed into the net to give Northeastern the 3-0 lead. Northeastern’s final goal was scored when junior forward Lewis Ehrlich fired a shot that lured Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic away from the net for the save. The ball ricocheted to the other side of the field, where sophomore forward Konrad Stefanek eluded a defender and sent it into a half-empty goal.

Even with the large margin of victory, the Huskies fought hard in a very physical game that included over 10 fouls by each team. The game was delayed early in the second half when Maine midfielder Philip Reed suffered an apparent head injury and was taken off the field by an ambulance.

Kilkenny is one of four Huskies to ever record three assists in one game. Anders Hoeyem holds the NU record for assists in a game with four, a feat he accomplished against Maine in 2001.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mahmoud Talaat served 76 minutes in goal, collecting three saves and allowing no scores. Sophmore Kyle Zinter finished the final 14 minutes of the game in front of the net for the Huskies. Although he was in for a short period of time, Zinter made several dazzling saves and recorded a total of three for the game.

The Huskies improve to 1-3 on the season, and will look to continue their winning ways against Columbia on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
