The Huskies played a tough game at home against No. 25 Providence Monday night and ended up tying 0-0 in two overtimes. Keeper Scott Partridge made four saves en route to his first career shutout.

The Huskies were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities on a Providence team that now has four shutouts on the year.

Northeastern came out strong and dominated play in the first half. They held the ball on Providence’s half of the field for a majority of the time and outshot the Friars 6-1. Their first good scoring opportunity came midway through the first half when Petur Vidarsson curved in a beautiful free kick that Nick Lueders barely missed with his foot in the corner.

Vidarsson gave the Huskies a very solid defensive effort while Lewis Ehrlich, Mike Kennedy and Alexander Volk kept the pressure on the Friars defense.

“I though we matched up very well in the first half of the game and held the upper hand,” said head coach Brian Ainscough. “It was a very physical game and our players got banged up. I wish we had some more bodies to put in there because we had to ride some guys longer than we should have.”

In the second half, the two teams were very physical with each other and the pace slowed down. Providence took control of the game and outshot the Huskies 8-5. Petur Vidarsson had the best chance to end the game in the 85th minute with a winding shot from 20 yards out, but it sailed just over the crossbar and the two teams ended regulation in a 0-0 tie.

In overtime, Partridge made the biggest save of the day off a header from the Friars’ Matt Marcin. The shot came off of a corner kick in the 109th minute.

“I was very happy with the concentration from our players after that game at Holy Cross,” said Ainscough. “We had a lot of good looks, but all we needed was that one break where it went in the net.”

The Huskies improve to 1-2-2 on the season while the Friars are now 3-0-2. NU is back in action on Saturday when they play at Maine at 1 p.m. The team returns to Parsons Field on Tuesday, Sept. 23 where they will host Boston University.
