The Huskies let up a goal from Mike Crosse with 47 seconds left in the second overtime to lose to Drexel 2-1 Wednesday evening.
Northeastern (5-3-6, 3-1-3 CAA) lost for the first time since Sept. 13 at Holy Cross. The nine game unbeaten streak was the longest of such in Huskies' history. Drexel (6-4-4, 4-1-2 CAA) extend their unbeaten streak to six games.
The Dragons got the scoring started in the first half when Carlos Ruthner found the back of the net off a rebound at 26:12. The goal came minutes after Northeastern's Mike Kennedy and Jonathan Batista picked up yellow cards. The Huskies collected four yellow cards on the day, three in the first half.
The Huskies remained scoreless until the 79th minute when Alexander Volk scored on a penalty kick for his first goal of the season. The two teams ended regulation in a 1-1 tie.
The Huskies outshot Drexel 6-4 in the extra periods, but Drexel was able to put in the game-winner in the last minute when Ruthner served the ball to Crosse in the box. Crosse was able to head the ball into the net for the win.
The Huskies held the shot advantage in the contest 20-17 depspite being without leading scorer Lewis Ehrlich for the second time in three games. Volk, Petur Vidarsson and Lars Okland each had four shots on the day. Keeper Scott Partridge made four saves on six shots on goal. NU also held a great advantage in corner kicks 12-3.
The Huskies have four games remaining in the regular season as they look to gain home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs. The Huskies are undefeated at home this season with a record of 4-0-2.
Northeastern is back in action on Saturday when the Huskies travel to Old Dominion at 7 p.m. The Huskies' final home game will be next Wednesday, Oct. 29 against the Delaware Blue Hens.
