Joe Donahue is in his 39th season of coaching at Northeastern and his fourth under head coach Sherman Hart. He rejoined the Husky coaching staff three years ago after five-years away from the program he helped bring to greatness. Donahue was the throwing coach at NU from 1963-99, making it the top throwing school in New England and one of the best in the East. Donahue is nationally recognized as one of the top technical coaches in the United States and has spoken at various track & field conferences.
The Huskies’ throwing corps has been very strong under the past several seasons. Last year, senior shot putter Zara Northover set NU and ECAC records of 55’0.75 and placed 10th at the NCAA Championship, her fifth and final appearance at the national championship. On the men’s side, Nate Hunter was CAA champ in the shot put and discus and Bamidele Faboyede won the hammer. In 2006, Derek Anderson set Northeastern records in the shot put (65’2.75) and discus (197’3) and earned All-America honors in the shot put.
From 1964-99 when Donahue was coaching at NU, Husky throwers won 42 New England titles and 12 IC4A titles, helping Northeastern win 12 New England indoor championships and 11 outdoor titles. Donahue coached the only NCAA champion in any sport in Northeastern history, Boris Djerassi, who won the national hammer title in 1975, as well as several other All-Americans.
Several of Donahue’s prodigies have been inducted to the Northeastern Hall of Fame, including Djerassi and three-time All-American Bill Johnston, who was inducted in 2004. Several of his former athletes have gone on to become prominent coaches, including Johnston.
As an athlete, Donahue set several NU throwing records, all of which were broken by athletes he coached. Donahue was inducted to the NU Hall of Fame in 1993.
