Northeastern University alum Steve Langton won the U.S. National Bobsled Team Trials in the two-man event on Nov. 4 in Park City, Utah. He will be competing in the four-man competition this weekend in Park City. Langton was a member of the men's track & field team from 2001-05 and graduated from Northeastern in 2005.

In the two-man event, Langton teamed with national champ Mike Kohn for two runs of 48.96 and 48.97, a combined time of 1:37.93. The runner-up time was a combined 1:38.47. Langton and Kohn's starts were the two best of the competition. Kohn earned a bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.

"Kohn had a great race, and Langton did an amazing job pushing a 4.89," men's bobsled head coach Brian Shimer said in a release on the U.S. bobsledding web site. "They really set themselves apart from the field at the start. This is only Langton’s second race, and he will be internationally competitive. He’s well ahead of the curve for such a young brakeman."

Langton is in his first season as a member of the U.S. Bobsled Team. Looking for a new sport to compete in after graduating from Northeastern, Langton contacted U.S. National Bobsled Team officials last April and was invited to physical testing at the Olympic Training Center in September. There, he recorded 677 out of a possible 700 points in testing, which was the highest total of any athlete at the camp.

Langton will be competing in the World Cup, which takes place in several parts over the next few months. The first competition is in Calgary, Alberta, from Nov. 26-Dec. 1. It continues in Park City, Utah from Dec. 3-8, then goes to Lake Placid, N.Y. from Dec. 10-16 before breaking for the holidays. Ultimately, Langton is competing for a spot at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Langton was a sprinter and jumper while at Northeastern. During the outdoor season of 2004, Langton outdoors, took second in the long jump (23'1.25) and third in the 100-meter dash (11.01) at the America East Championship. In his final season competing for the Huskies, the indoor 2005 season, he finished third in the 55-meter dash and fourth in the long jump at the America East Championship.

A native of Melrose, Mass., Langton attended St. John's Prep, where he was Massachusetts Class A champ in the 100, long jump and 4x100 relay. He set school records in several events and was a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic selection. His father, Steven, played football at Northeastern from 1975-78.
