Hello Husky Fans!

Fall Sports Bid Farewell To The America East

The fall season is complete, marking the end of an era. The Huskies were once again successful as the men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball teams competed in their last season of America East conference competition.

Husky Highlights: Field Hockey Wins 4th Straight America East Championship

The field hockey team ended its dominant run in the conference by defeating Boston University in the America East Field Hockey Championship 2-0 to win their 4th straight America East title. The field hockey program has compiled an 84-19-3 conference record and 24-4 America East tournament record. The program has also won 10 of 14 America East Field Hockey Championships since the tournament’s inception in 1990. The Huskies’ run was ended by eventual national champion Wake Forest in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.

The men’s cross country team finished ninth at the America East Championship. Tom Brown was the Huskies’ top finisher in 49th place while Bryan Van Epps took 61st and Seth Housman placed 64th.

The women’s cross country team finished eighth at the America East Championship. Stephanie Morrison led the Huskies with an 18th place finish. Emily Watson took 25th and Amy Hicks placed 27th.

Women’s soccer set a new program record for wins in a season with 12. The Huskies completed their last season in the America East with a 5-3-1 record and advanced to the 2nd round of the America East tournament.

Men’s soccer team had two student-athletes named All-America East. Juniors Tom Hiemreid and Sergio Saccoccio were both name to the All-America East 2nd Team.

The volleyball team finished their last season of America East play with an impressive 11-3 conference record. The Huskies were eliminated by Maine in the conference semifinals.

Changing Conference Affiliation, Changing Schedules

Six Husky teams will see regular season conference schedule format changes as NU enters the Colonial Athletic Association in the 2005-06 season. Baseball, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball will play more regular season conference games than in the past. Men’s and women’s basketball will begin divisional conference play.

CAA Baseball

Eleven institutions sponsor baseball in the CAA as opposed to eight in the America East conference. The conference schedule will be a single round robin format consisting of three game series that total 30 regular season conference games. Single nine-inning games will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is a change from the America East format which consists of a nine-inning and seven-inning game on Saturday, and a single nine-inning game on Sunday.

CAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball

Twelve institutions sponsor men’s and women’s basketball in the CAA as opposed to 10 in the America East conference. The number of conference games the Huskies play will remain 18. However, the conference schedule format will change. Every institution will play each other at least once during the season. A home and home will be played against five permanent partners within a division. Northeastern’s permanent partners are Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Georgia State and Hofstra. A home and home will be played against two institutions in the other division annually. Next year, those teams will be Towson and James Madison. Four single games will be played against the remaining four institutions in the other division annually. Next year, those teams will be UNC-Wilmington, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and William and Mary. This is a change from the America East format which consists of a home and home against each of the other nine institutions.

CAA Field Hockey

Nine institutions sponsor field hockey in the CAA as opposed to seven in the America East. The Huskies will play eight conference games in a single round robin format.

CAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Twelve institutions sponsor men’s and women’s soccer in the CAA as opposed to ten in the America East. The Huskies will play 11 conference games in a single round robin format.

CAA Volleyball

Ten institutions sponsor volleyball in the CAA as opposed to eight in the America East. The Huskies will play 18 conference games in a double round robin format with Hofstra as NU’s travel partner.

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same.

Schedule formats will remain the same for cross country, track & field, and swimming & diving. They will compete without a formal regular season conference schedule. The conference championships in each sport will be decided at conference championship meets.
