Hello Husky Fans!

NCAA Graduation Report

The 2004 NCAA Division I Graduation-Rates Report is in! I am proud to announce that Northeastern Athletics posted an impressive 70 percent graduation rate. This places us 10 percentage points higher than the general student population at Northeastern University. Although we are very proud of our graduation rate, we are not satisfied. We are continuously striving to increase our graduation rate. We have created the Student-Athletes First Program to display our commitment to raising our graduation rate.

Student-Athletes First Program

The Student-Athletes First Program is designed to meet the needs and interests of our student-athletes while ensuring that they grow as an individual and experience the collegiate environment with all that it has to offer. This program welcomes them into the Husky family, encourages student-athletes to get involved with Athletic Department programs and give back to society through community service projects. Through cooperative education, summer job placement and interaction with alumni, the program will assist our student-athletes in their search for an ideal permanent job placement. The program also promotes them to stay involved with Northeastern Athletics once their eligibility has expired and they have graduated.

New Student-Athlete Receptions

New student-athlete receptions were held during the month of September. The receptions were designed with freshmen student-athletes in mind. The small receptions were an opportunity for new freshman student-athletes to get to know other freshmen student-athletes, Athletics Department staff, alumni and other faculty and staff from across the University in an informal setting.

Welcome Back Barbeque & Orientation

Northeastern Athletics hosted a Welcome Back Barbeque on September 6, and it was a huge success! The barbeque was held following the new student-athlete orientation which took place earlier in the day. The orientation was a chance for new student-athletes to learn about athletic department policies and procedures. Following the conclusion of orientation new student-athletes joined Athletic Department staff, current student-athletes and alumni at the barbeque. This was a great opportunity for all student-athletes to get to know members of the Northeastern Athletics Community.

All of the student-athletes in attendance received their PAWS T-shirt. PAWS is more than just our mascot’s name, it is also the name for our Providing Athletes With Support program. The program promotes student-athletes to attend each others games. The black T-shirt with a “concert style” schedule of games on the back is the official t-shirt of the PAWS program.

Career Services for Student-Athletes

The retail store giant Target will be running interviewing workshops through their corporate headquarters for Northeastern student-athletes this month. The workshops will be held in the Shanahan Academic Center located in the Cabot Center. In addition to the interviewing workshops, Northeastern University Career Services will be hosting resume workshops and “How did you get there from here?” networking sessions for junior and senior student-athletes. This will be a great opportunity for them to connect with former student-athletes currently working in various fields.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Community Service Week

The Northeastern Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding Community Service Week. Community Service Week begins November 13 and will kick off our community service campaign. Our teams will be performing special community service projects during the week.

Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series Champions!

Northeastern Athletics congratulates the Boston Red Sox on their first World Series Championship in 86 years! Northeastern Athletics has enjoyed its partnership with the Red Sox and looks forward to continuing its partnership in the years to come.

Go Huskies!
