BOSTON, MA — Erika Silva, a native of Middletown, R.I., and a senior on the Northeastern University women’s hockey team, reached yet another milestone Tuesday night when she made her 2000th career save.
The feat came in the championship game of the 23rd annual Beanpot against Harvard. Silva was impressive in net, finishing with 39 stops, including 15 in the thrid period alone. For her efforts, she received the Joe Bertagna Award for the second straight season as the tournament’s outstanding goalie.
Silva is only the second goalie in Northeastern history to have 2000 career saves. She now has a total of 2011. On the season, Silva has 633 saves and will try to become the first goalie in Northeastern history to have two seasons with at least 700 saves. She had 710 stops last year as a junior. Silva has played in 24 games this season and is averaing 26.4 stops per game. In eight different games, she has made at least 30 saves, and has made at least 40 saves four times. Additionally, in an exhibition game against Team USA Feb. 4, Silva held the high-scoring national team to only three goals while making an astounding 59 saves.
Silva is one of 10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award given annually to the top player in women’s college hockey. Silva is the holder of nine different Northeastern records including the career marks for save percentage (.928), goals against average (1.82), shutouts (20) and wins (58). She has started in net in 61 of the last 62 games and has been the winning goalie in 37 consecutive Northeastern victories. Of her 90 career starts, Silva has allowed two goals or fewer an impressive 67 times.
Silva and Northeastern will be in action this weekend in a home-and-home series with Providence. PC comes to Boston and Matthews Arena on Saturday and NU will travel to Providence on Sunday. Both games begin at 2 p.m.
