Players collect season honors
Date of Release: March 15, 2001
BOSTON, MA - The ECAC announced its annual all-stars on Thursday March 15 and three Northeastern players were honored.
Senior goalie Erika Silva was named ECAC Goalie of the Year, as well as first team all-conference. She was joined on the first team by teammate Brooke Whitney. Whitney and senior Kathleen Savino were both named to the ECAC All-Academic Squad.
Silva capped off an outstanding career with an impressive senior campaign. Silva is the holder of 11 different records at Northeastern and during her senior season, she set the mark for saves in a season, with 858 bettering the previous mark by 83 stops. She averaged 27.7 saves per game. In 31 starts, she had at least 30 saves 13 times and over 40 saves four times. This does not even include an amazing 59-save effort in an exhibition game against Team USA. Silva had a career-high 46 saves in a 3-2 win over Princeton Nov.4 and 40 stops in a 4-0 defeat of top-ranked undefeated Dartmouth January 5. Over the final eight games of the season, Silva had at least 29 saves seven times and averaged 33.0 saves per game during that span. She had a 16-14-1 record, with a 2.63 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.
Whitney began the season with game-winning goals in NU's first
two outings, and it was just a sign of things to come. She posted a
26-14-40 line. Among her 26 goals were seven game-winning goals, seven
power-play goals and three short handed scores. She had seven multi-goal games on the season including a hat trick versus New Hampshire in
December and four goals against Boston College in February. Perhaps her
best outing was against Harvard on Feb. 25, when she had a pair of
unassisted goals on end-to-end rushes including the game-winner in the
third period. During the season, Whitney collected her 100th career point and finished her junior season with a 54-62-116 line in 86 career games.
Savino and Whitney were both named to the All-Academic team. To be named to the all-academic team, student athletes must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 and have competed in at least one-half of their team's contests. Savino, a Secondary Education major, played in 28 games as a senior with nine goals and 11 assists.
