Silva and Whitney named All-American
Date of Release: March 23, 2001

BOSTON, MA - Two members of the Northeastern women's hockey team have been named 2000-2001 JOFA/AHCA Division I All-Americans. Senior goalie Erika Silva (Middletown, RI/Providence Country Day) is a first team selection and Brooke Whitney (Snohomish, WA/Northwest Admirals) is a second team selection.

Silva, who was also the ECAC Goalie of the Year and a first team All-ECAC selection, capped off an outstanding career with an impressive senior campaign. Silva is the holder of 11 different records at Northeastern and during her senior season, she set the mark for saves in a season, with 858 bettering the previous mark by 83 stops. She averaged 27.7 saves per game. In 31 starts, she had at least 30 saves 13 times and over 40 saves four times. This does not even include an amazing 59-save effort in an exhibition game against Team USA. Silva had a career-high 46 saves in a 3-2 win over Princeton Nov.4 and 40 stops in a 4-0 defeat of top-ranked undefeated Dartmouth January 5. Over the final eight games of the season, Silva had at least 29 saves seven times and averaged 33.0 saves per game during that span. She had a 16-14-1 record, with a 2.63 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

Whitney, who was also a first team All-ECAC selection as well as a first team ECAC All-Academic Team member, began the season with game-winning goals in NU's first two outings, and it was just a sign of things to come. She posted a 26-14-40 line. Among her 26 goals were seven game-winning goals, seven power-play goals and three short handed scores. She had seven multi-goal games on the season including a hat trick versus New Hampshire in December and four goals against Boston College in February. Perhaps her best outing was against Harvard on Feb. 25, when she had a pair of unassisted goals on spectacular end-to-end rushes including the game-winner in the third period. During the season, Whitney collected her 100th career point and finished her junior season with a 54-62-116 line in 86 career games.

The JOFA All-Americans are chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association. In addition to Silva, the first team includes Correne Bredin (Dartmouth) and Courtney Kennedy (Minnesota) on defense, and Jennifer Botterill (Harvard), Tammy Shewchuk (Harvard) and Maria Rooth (Minnesota-Duluth) at the three forward slots. At forward with Whitney on the second team are Meghan Hunter (Wisconsin) and Jessica Tabb (Providence), Rachel Barrie (St. Lawrence) is the goalie and Isabelle Chartand (St. Lawrence) and Kerry Weiland (Wisconsin) are the defensemen.
