Northeastern announces Hall of Fame Class of 2009

The Northeastern University Hall of Fame Class of 2009 will be inducted at Northeastern’s Curry Student Center in Boston on Thursday, May 21. The seven honorees are Laura Kelso-Shiman (women’s swimming & diving), Dave Klemic (football & track & field), Dan McGillis (ice hockey), Leon J. McKanas (football), Donna-Lynn Rosa (women’s ice hockey), Daniel Walsh (rowing) and Jen White-Richardson (field hockey).

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 in the West Addition of Northeastern's Curry Student Center. For tickets to the event, call George Makris at (617) 373-4821.

Laura Kelso-Shiman, ’84, was one of Northeastern’s greatest breaststrokers as she set Husky records in the 50, 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events as a freshman and then broke them all as a sophomore. She won four New England championships and three Greater Boston Collegiate titles and twice earned All-America status with third and eighth place finishes in the 50 at the NCAA Championship to become NU’s first female All-American.

Dave Klemic, ’01, was a star for both the football and track & field teams. On the gridiron, he holds the NU records for most receptions (217), receiving yards (3,419) and touchdown catches (41). He was a three-time All-Conference and two-time All-New England selection. On the track, he was a four-time America East indoor champion and three-time outdoor champion in the long jump. He was voted the conference’s Performer of the Year three times, twice outdoors, once indoors.

Dan McGillis, ’97, developed into one of the best all-around defensemen in the nation. He finished his career with 30 goals and 83 assists for 113 points, the fourth-highest scoring defenseman in program history. He was Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year and went on to earn All-Hockey East and All-New England honors twice and All-America honors as a senior. He was also a Hobey Baker Award finalist. He went on to play 10 years in the NHL, scoring 238 points in 733 games.

Leon J. McKanas, ’02, was one of Northeastern’s most prolific running backs. In his senior season, he rushed for a program-record 1,756 yards and 14 touchdowns. That season capped a career that saw him run for an NU-record 3,692 yards. He earned All-New England, All-Atlantic 10 and first-team Hanson All-America honors and received the Harry Agganis Award as New England’s outstanding senior football player.

Donna-Lynn Rosa, ’90, had 56 goals and 65 assists for 121 points, the most for any Husky defenseman, leading Northeastern to a 90-11-3 record and two ECAC championships during her four-year tenure. She was a part of Northeastern’s undefeated season during her junior year when the Huskies went 26-0-1 and won the ECAC title. She was a two-time All-ECAC selection and went on to play seven years in the National Women’s Hockey League.

Daniel Walsh, ’03, is one of only two Northeastern rowers to ever win Most Valuable Oarsman award twice and be honored as the team’s Outstanding Freshman Oarsman. He led the Huskies to three consecutive Eastern Sprints finals, including earning bronze his senior season. He also led NU to the finals of the IRA that year. He went on to join the U.S. National team and won bronze in the World Championships in 2006 and in the Olympics in 2008.

Jen White-Richardson, ’00, was a three-time All-American for Northeastern, leading the Huskies to four consecutive conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Her 63 career assists still stands as a program record. She finished with 141 points, leading the Huskies to a 72-19-2 record during her tenure. In addition to her All-America honors, she was a two-time All-America East and All-America East Tournament selection.
