Northeastern captures Terrier Invitational
The Huskies broke three school records en route to its sixth victory of the season. Sophomore Emily Sutliff broke two school records while taking first in the 1650 freestyle. Her time of 17:13.77 broke a nine-year record held by Jenelle Bryan. At the 1000-yard mark of the race Sutliff timed in at 10:23.37, breaking Northeastern's oldest swimming record previously held by Jessica Gerber, who set it in 1992. Sophomore Kathrine Fugge broke her own record from last year in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:52.52.
Northeastern held the lead after the first day and kept it until the end. The three-day event featured nine other teams, including Central Connecticut State and Boston College, two teams the Huskies beat earlier in the year.
Leading the team in points was Fugge with 74. Fugge took first in the 200 IM (2:07.36) and the record-breaking 200 freestyle. She also finished second in the 50 (24.16) and the 100 (52.05) freestyle events.
Arguably the most encouraging part of Northeastern's victory was the success of the relay teams. The 400 medley team of Kara Lane, Elena Alvarez, Alexandra Doty and Fugge placed first in the event. Doty, Lane, Fugge and Heather Whiting also contributed a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
A relay team consisting of Alexis Kalevich, Sara Martin, Erica Smotrycz and Fugge captured a pair of second-place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Northeastern also managed a third-place finish in the 800 freestyle relay, thanks to Martin, Lauren Williams, Fugge and Emily Sutliff.
Sutliff had one of her best performances of the year, taking first in both the 500 (5:02.55) and 1650 (17:13.77) freestyle events as well as helping the third-place relay team. Elena Alvarez was also a major point scorer for the Huskies, as the junior took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33), second in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.15) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:10.29).
In diving, Brittany Gilles had her streak of first place finishes snapped, but still was the Huskies' leading diver. The senior took sixth in the 1-meter (445.85) and 14th in the 3-meter (202.20). Prior to the invitational, Gilles had won every diving event this season for the Huskies.
Freshman Sarah Martin came in third place in the 50 freestyle (24.31) along with her strong relay performances. Senior Kara Lane chipped in with a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.93) and a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:05.25).
Northeastern is now off to its best start since 2001-02, a year in which the team never lost an event. The Huskies will return to action on Dec. 1 at Massachusetts, a team that finished fourth at the Terrier Invite with 449 points.
