The Weekly Watch

The Northeastern volleyball team got off to a great start of the 2002 season by winning its first three matches and capturing the title at the Colgate Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y. The Huskies dominated the two-day event as they swept all three of their matches against St. Francis, Colgate and Tulsa.

Junior setter Kristin Ursillo (San Diego, Calif.) was named Tournament MVP and America East Player of the Week for her outstanding play. On the week Ursillo averaged 1.22 kills per game, 12.33 assists per game and 2.33 digs per game with five total service aces. Ursillo’s best match of the tournament came against Tulsa as she recorded 40 assists and 11 digs for her first double-double of the 2002 season.

Senior Kelly Cognac (Los Gatos, Calif.) proved that she has adapted well to the new "libero" position, a designated back-row specialist, as she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Cognac averaged 3.17 digs per game and was the tournament's top "libero." (Click here for AVCA's explanation of the "libero")

Head coach Ken Nichols began to reap the benefits of his hard work in the offseason as newcomers Jana Kubalova (Bratislava, Slavakia) and Larissa Adomat (Houston, Texas) displayed their talents for the first time at NU. Kubalova, a sophomore transfer from Texas Tech, joined Ursillo and Cognac on the All-Tournament Team. With averages of 3.57 kills per game and 2.00 digs per game, Kubalova showed that she has both offensive and defensive capabilities. Adomat, a highly touted freshman, had one of the most impressive weekends for a middle hitter in recent memory. On the week, Adomat averaged 3.57 kills per game with a hitting percentage of .511. In the match against Tulsa on Aug. 31, Adomat recorded 15 kills with no errors on 24 attacks for a hefty .625 hitting percentage.
