Texas Christian used a match-high 28 kills from Ellen Rehme to defeat Northeastern 3-1 (27-30, 30-27, 23-30, 28-30) on the final day of the New England Challenge Saturday night at Solomon Court. Whitney Turner paced the Huskies with 21 kills and was named to the all-tournament team.
Dominika Szabo led the Horned Frogs in game one with a game-high six kills as TCU outhit the Huskies 20-14 and grabbed a .255 attack percentage in the opening contest. TCU earned the first point of the game with a kill from Rehme and the Horned Frogs never relenquished the lead, allowing NU to sneak to within a point at 27-26 on a TCU attack error. Two kills by Anna Vaughn and one from Szabo helped Texas Christian finish out the game 30-27.
The two teams traded the lead early in game two, but the Horned Frogs jumped out to a five-point lead at 14-9. NU reeled off five straight points to knot the score at 14 and then again at 15, using a service ace from Kira Batura and a kill by Turner. The Huskies continued to control the remainder of the game and claimed it 30-27.
TCU, led by Rehme's eight kills in the third game, took the advantage at 11-10 and held on the finish the game 30-23. The Husky swingers hit a game-low .050 in the third game, compared to .137 from TCU.
The teams traded the lead throughout the fourth game, but it was TCU who would hang on the for 30-28 win. Rehme added another eight kills in the final game and Szabo added five for the Horned Frogs. Turner also posted eight kills for the Huskies in game four.
Northeastern returns to Solomon Court on Tues., Sept. 14 when they welcome Connecticut at 7 p.m.
