The Northeastern volleyball team came out on top in its season opener, defeating the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 3-2 (26-30, 30-27, 30-27, 27-30, 15-6) on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Baltimore. Junior Whitney Turner led the way for the Huskies with 25 kills, while freshmen Lauren DeTurk and Brianna Seitz posted impressive outings in their first collegiate match.

The Huskies (1-0) jumped out to a 15-11 lead to begin the first game, but a Turner service error and back-to-back aces by UMBC’s Christine Shala got momentum going in the Retrievers’ direction, and UMBC (0-1) never looked back for a 30-26 victory.

UMBC carried that momentum to a 14-10 advantage in the second game, but the Huskies rattled off four straight kills to pull even at 14. The two teams grappled back and forth to a 19-19 tie, but NU tallied eight of the game’s next 10 points to pull away en route to a 30-27 victory.

The Huskies struck early in the third game of the contest, running off seven straight points, three on kills by DeTurk, to take a 10-3 lead. UMBC cut the edge to 13-11, but NU once again took to the offensive, rattling off six points in a row – including four consecutive kills by Turner – to build a 19-11 lead and go on to its second straight 30-27 win.

The Retrievers refused to fold, though, and the two teams were neck-and-neck in the fourth frame at 22-all. UMBC was then able to regain momentum and chip away for a 30-27 triumph to send the match to a fifth and deciding game.

Game five looked to be another battle between the two squads at its outset, but the Huskies wore down the Retrievers to cruise to a 15-6 victory. NU held a slight 6-5 edge early in the game, but reeled off nine of the match’s final 10 points, two coming on blocks by senior captain Larissa Adomat, to come away with the 3-2 victory.

Turner’s 25 kills led all hitters, and DeTurk and Seitz both shined in their NU debuts. Seitz finished the contests with 20 kills and a .283 attack percentage to go along with 13 digs, while DeTurk posted impressive numbers across the board, with 17 kills, a .261 attack percentage, 13 digs and four blocks. Sophomore Ashley Reeves added 13 kills in the victory. Jessie Folk notched 15 kills in a losing effort for UMBC.

Junior setter Ivana Pavlisin led the Huskies with 64 assists and added seven kills on 14 attempts for NU. Sophomore Kira Batura led Northeastern with 25 digs in her first game at libero for the Huskies.

NU will look to go to 2-0 on the young season later this afternoon, when it takes on Villanova in Baltimore at 2 p.m.
