The Northeastern volleyball team had its winning streak halted at four, as Virginia Commonwealth earned its first conference victory, 3-1 (26-30, 30-27, 30-28, 30-23) Sunday at Solomon Court. VCU upped its record to 7-8 on the season (1-4 Colonial Athletic Association), while NU dropped to 6-7 (4-2 CAA) The Huskies came out solid in game one, hitting an impressive .382 in the frame. The Huskies led the game from start to finish, with senior Brandie Genibrel registering five kills. The Rams hit just .088 in the first game, which NU took 30-26. Game two saw the tables turn in VCU’s favor, as the Rams held tight with the Huskies in the early going, fighting to a 16-all tie. VCU then took the game’s next six points with Griselle Lopez Pereira at the serve. The Rams held a late 29-22 lead, when NU showed some life by rallying for five straight points, three on VCU errors. The road squad then recovered, and grabbed the game 30-27 on an Elisa Kuehnel kill. The third game saw VCU jump out to a 9-7 lead, then register 10 of the next 12 points in the game to surge to a 19-9 advantage. NU chipped away at the deficit, trimming the lead to 24-21, but the Rams registered a run of their own, grabbing three straight points to take a 27-21 edge. NU rebutted with four straight before the Rams came back for two in a row to push NU to the limit at 29-25. Northeastern got three straight points, forcing a VCU timeout at 29-28, but the Rams then got another game-ending kill from Kuehnel for a 30-28 triumph. VCU never trailed in the final game, holding a lead fron the 11-10 mark on to take the match with a 30-23 victory. The Rams had four players with double-digit kills, led by Kuehnel’s 15 and Renata Salvatori’s 12. Cat Juson posted 51 assists, while Pereira led the road squad with 19 digs. Northeastern was led by Genibrel’s 12 kills, while senior Larissa Adomat and freshman Lauren DeTurk scored 10 each. Kira Batura registered 19 digs in her second straight match at libero. The Huskies are back in action this weekend as they take to the road for CAA contests against conference-leading Towson and Delaware. The Tigers are 5-0 in the CAA and 13-2 overall. Game time against Towson is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. in Baltimore, Md., while the Huskies will face the Fighting Blue Hens Saturday at 7 p.m. Volleyball Detailed Stats
