Nichols announces new recruit
Dec. 12, 2007
Boston, MA

Head coach Ken Nichols of the volleyball team has announced that Stephanie Starnes (San Angelo, Texas/San Angelo Central High School) will join the Huskies next season as part of Nichols’ 2008 recruiting class. As a senior, Starnes was named first team All-State and to the All-Texas All-Star team in addition to earning a number of other awards. The Huskies finished 2007 in second place in the CAA with an 11-3 record, 19-13 overall.

With her senior season wrapped up, Starnes will compete for TCA-Texas (Team Complete Athlete) this upcoming club season, one of the best known clubs in club volleyball.

Starnes had a terrific four year career at San Angelo, where she was a four year varsity player and led her team in kills for three years. In addition to her All-State honors as a senior, Starnes was named Co-MVP of the Standard Times’ All-West Texas volleyball team. She was also named first team All-District, Area Co-MVP, MVP of the Nita Vannoy Tournament and earned academic All-District and All-State honors.

As a junior, she was named both District and Area MVP, and went to the Junior Olympic National Championships with Austin Metro in the 16-year-old bracket. As a sophomore she was named both first team All-District and All-Area, and as an incoming freshman, was named one of the top 59 freshmen in the nation by Prep-Volleyball.

Said Nichols, “Stephanie is an ideal fit for Northeastern University and our program. She is of very strong character and conviction and you can see that exemplified in both her academic pursuits and her play. As a middle blocker she is ready, as we speak, to contribute significantly to our success and will only get stronger with this season’s great club experience. She is one of the quickest middles I have seen in a long time with a true blocker’s instinct. Besides all that, she can crush the ball as an attacker and is court-aware well beyond her years.”

The Huskies are coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, finishing the year with a 19-13 overall record, and an 11-3 record in the CAA which was good for second place. Northeastern will lose just one player from 2007’s squad, though that player is first team All-CAA performer Kira Batura.
