Northeastern 71, Cornell 54
ITHACA, N.Y. - Tournament Most Valuable Player Tesha Tinsley scored 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting to lead the Northeastern women's basketball team to a
71-54 win over Cornell in the championship game of the Cornell Classic on Saturday evening at Newman Arena.
Northeastern (4-1) used a 20-2 run that spanned both halves to take control of the game. After Cornell (4-4) took its final lead of the contest at 23-22 with 4:32 left
in the half, the Huskies closed out the opening stanza with a 13-2 run. After intermission, Northeastern scored the first seven points to take a 42-25 lead.
Cornell fought back with a 7-0 run of its own to close within 42-32, but Tinsley scored eight of Northeastern's next 12 points to help the Huskies extend their lead
back up to a comfortable margin.
Northeastern also received strong performances from forward Betsy Palecek (22 points, nine rebounds) and center Lani Lawrence (10 points, 11 rebounds), who
had her second double-double of the tournament.
Cornell was led by sophomore guard Janice Arcilla, who scored 13 points, while freshman guard Breean Walas chipped in with 10 points.
In the consolation game, Loyola (3-1) received 22 points from forward Erica Rath and held Radford (1-6) to just 18.2% shooting (4-22) in the second half as the
Greyhounds pulled away for a 78-51 win. Loyola led just 41-39 with 15 minutes to play, but held the Highlanders without a field goal for the next 12:51 to take
control of the game with a 25-3 spurt. Loyola also received 14 points from forward Jina Mosley, while Radford was led by guard Kelli Tull's 13 points.
Named to the all-tournament team were Lani Lawrence of Northeastern, Kristie Riccio of Cornell, Mary Anne Kirsch and Erica Rath of Loyola, and Jennifer Grant
of Radford.
