Northeastern 62, Drexel 57
Betsy Palecek matched her career high with 23 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Northeastern past Drexel, 62-57, in an America East women’s basketball game at Cabot Gym Thursday.
NU improved to 9-4, 3-2 in league play, while Drexel lost its seventh straight and fell to 5-9, 1-5.
Tesha Tinsley added 14 points for the Huskies, with Wanda Almengot and Lani Lawrence netting 10 apiece. Michelle Maslowski had her second straight double-double to pace the Drexel attack, scoring 20 points and pulling 10 boards. Jenna Vebrosky had 12 points.
The game was tight throughout, but NU led most of the way. There were seven ties and six lead changes in the first half, the last of which came on a Maureen Michaels layup that gave Drexel a 28-27 edge at the break. Palecek had 13 of her 23 points before intermission.
Palecek’s layup in the first minute of the second half gave NU the lead for good, 29-28, and started an 20-11 run that gave the Huskies their largest advantage of the night, 47-39 with 10:55 to play. But Drexel stayed in the game, getting inside baskets from Maslowski. She had seven points in a 10-5 spurt that cut the NU lead to 54-51 with 2:55 to go. Palecek answered with a layup for the Huskies. The Dragons cut it to three two more times, but got no closer.
The win was Coach Joy Malchodi’s 250th at NU. Only four previous Husky athletics coaches have ever reached the milestone.
