Northeastern 62, Hofstra 49
Senior guard Tesha Tinsley had 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists to lead Northeastern to a 62-49 win over Hofstra in an America East women's basketball game at Cabot Gym Saturday.
The Huskies improved to 10-4 and 5-2 in league play with their fourth win in the last five games. Hofstra dropped to 4-11 and 2-5 with its fifth straight loss.
Noreen Duffy led the Flying Dutchwomen with a career-high 24 points. Wanda Almengot and Betsy Palecek added 16 points for the Huskies, while Lani Lawrence had her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
With the score tied 10-10 and 12:44 to play in the first half, the Huskies went on a 6-0 run that included two Tinsley layups to take the lead for good. Palecek's layup with 1:09 to go before intermission gave NU its biggest lead of the first half, 23-16. With the basket, Palecek also became just the eighth player in Husky history to have 1000 points for her career.
Hofstra scored the last four points of the half and trailed 23-20 at the break. The Flying Dutchwomen were unable to cut into the deficit in the second half. Up 27-24, NU had a 14-4 spurt to go up 41-28 - its largest advantage of the afternoon - with 10:20 to play. Behind the hot shooting of Duffy (22 second half points) Hofstra managed to get within six two times, but came no closer.
NU held Hofstra's leading scorer Denee Rivera without a field goal. Rivera, who came into the game averaging 10.8 points, finished with one point, a free throw with 37 seconds left.
