Northeastern 74, Maine 68
Betsy Palecek scored a career-high 29 points as Northeastern gave Maine its first conference loss of the season, 74-68, in an America East women's basketball game at Cabot Gym Thursday.
The Huskies, losers of 12 straight to the Black Bears entering the night, improved to 13-6, 7-4. Maine had its 10-game win streak halted and dropped to 15-5, 11-1 in conference play. It was NU's first win over Maine since Jan. 29, 1994.
Tesha Tinsley added 24 points and six assists for the Huskies, while freshman Genny Caruso had a career-high 14 points, including two key three-pointers. Kristen McCormick led four Black Bears in double figures with her 18 points. Maine's Jamie Cassidy, the league's top scorer, netted a season-low nine points, 15 under her average. She was in foul trouble all night, picking up her third personal with 10:32 to go in the first half and her fourth with 15:13 left in the game. She played just 21 minutes.
The Huskies dominated the second half, scoring six straight points to take their first lead of the night, 37-35, with 18:29 to play. There then were seven lead changes before the Huskies took control. With Maine up 53-52, Wanda Almengot made a three-pointer that gave NU the lead for good at 55-53 with 8:02 showing. The Huskies extended their advantage to nine, the biggest of the game, as Tinsley capped an 11-1 run with a three-point play that made it 63-54 with 5:59 to go. Maine got no closer than five the rest of the way.
The Black Bears jumped out to a 12-2 lead and had a 20-12 edge with 11:18 left in the first half before the Huskies started taking advantage of Cassidy's absence. Palecek scored six straight points to start a 13-6 Husky run that cut Maine's lead to one a 26-25 with 6:18 left. Maine took a 35-31 lead into intermission. Palecek had 16 of her 29 in the first half.
