Northeastern 80, Hartford 63
Tesha Tinsley made 12 of 14 shots from the field and scored 33 points to lead Northeastern to a comfortable 80-63 win over Hartford in an America East women's basketball game at Cabot Gym Friday.
The Huskies never trailed in winning their fourth straight game and improving to 17-7, 11-5 in league play. Hartford has now lost six of its last seven games and dropped to 8-16, 5-11.
Sophomore Lani Lawrence added a career-high 18 points for the Huskies, while freshman Genny Caruso also had a personal best with 16 points. Tracy Stolle paced Hartford with 21 points, Desiree Humbert netted 16 and Janeka Lopp had 12.
NU was playing without its second-leading scorer, Betsy Palecek (17.2 ppg), who was out with an ankle injury. It didn't matter much as the Huskies cruised after jumping out to leads of 6-1 and 13-5. Hartford missed its first six shots from the field, failing to make a field goal until Candace Lloyd's layup made it 13-7 with 14:01 to go in the first half. From there the Huskies went on a 14-4 run to open a 16-point edge, their largest of the first half, at 27-11 with 9:36 left. NU led 44-29 at the break as Tinsley and Caruso both had 14 points. Tinsley was six of seven from the field before intermission, while Caruso made four of five three-point attempts.
It was more of the same in the second half. NU started with a 10-0 spurt that made it a 25-point advantage, the team's largest of the night, at 54-29 with 17:38 left. The Hawks made a 17-4 run to get within 12, 58-46 with 12:14 showing, but could get no closer. Tinsley had eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, during a subsequent 14-8 surge that pushed the lead back to a safe 18 at 72-54 with 5:40 remaining.
For Palecek, it was the first game she missed in two seasons. She is expected back for Sunday's game with Vermont. NU has now won three straight over Hartford.
