Northeastern 72, Vermont 59
Tesha Tinsley made 13 of 21 field goal attempts and scored 37 points to lead Northeastern to a 72-59 win over Vermont in an America East women's basketball game at Cabot Gym Sunday. With Vermont leading 46-43 and 8:24 left, NU went on an 18-2 run over the next six and a half minutes to take a comfortable 61-48 edge with 1:45 remaining. Tinsley had eight points during the spurt, including a three-pointer and a three-point play. The Huskies then extended their advantage to 67-51, their largest lead of the day, with 1:12 showing. NU won its fifth straight game and improved to 18-7, 12-5 in league play. The Catamounts had won six of their last seven games, but fell to 16-10, 11-6. Betsy Palecek added 14 points for NU, while low-post partner Lani Lawrence netted eight to go along with 16 rebounds. Karalyn Church paced Vermont with 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Jen MacAulay had 12 points. Vermont jumped out to an 11-2 lead with 14:18 to go in the first half as Church had six quick points. Palecek and Lawrence were struggling inside for NU (a combined 0 for 10 from the floor in the first half), but Tinsley was keeping the Huskies in the game. She had 15 points on six of 10 field goal shooting as NU went into intermission down 29-23. Church already had a double-double at the break with 13 points and 11 boards. The Huskies came out fast in the second half, opening with a 12-2 run for a 35-31 lead and 14:36 left. The Catamounts answered with a 15-8 surge to reclaim the edge at 46-43 with 8:24 remaining. Lawrence then made a layup to start NU's decisive run. Tinsley became just the third NU player ever to surpass 1500 career points in the game, and now has a total of 1529. It was a major win for the Huskies, who entered the afternoon tied with Vermont for third place. NU and New Hampshire now share second with 12-5 records. The Huskies hold the tie-breaker, however, by virtue of NU's win over league-leading Maine. NU had lost seven straight times to Vermont, last defeating the Catamounts on Feb. 23, 1995.
