America East Tournament Semifinals
Northeastern played a nearly flawless first half jumping out to a 45-24 lead at the break and then cruised home to defeat Drexel, 76-58, and advance to the 1999 America East Women's Basketball Championship at UVM's Patrick Gym on Friday night. The second seeded Huskies will take on top seeded Maine on Saturday in their first trip to the title game since 1995.
The Dragons had an early 11-10 lead but a 17-2 Northeastern run over three minutes gave the Huskies (21-7) control of the game. In the first half Northeastern hit seven of nine from three point range and recorded just one turnover. The win was the eighth straight for N.U., the longest such streak in the program's history.
Northeastern's all-America East guard Tesha Tinsley led all scorers with 27 points and teammates Lani Lawrence (also game-high 10 rebounds) and Beth Hanewald each tallied 16. Hanewald was a perfect six for six from the floor.
Maureen Michaels had 17 and Michelle Maslowski added 15 for the Dragons who advanced to the semifinal with an upset of #3 UNH on Thursday. Drexel ends their season at 12-16.
