America East Tournament Championship
Tesha Tinsley scored a game-high 28 points but it was her fifth assist of the game that gave Northeastern a 57-55 win over top seed Maine in the 1999 America East Women's Basketball Championship game at UVM's Patrick Gym on Saturday afternoon. The title is the first for the Huskies since 1987 and with it they earn their first ever trip to the NCAA tournament.
Tied at 55-55 with 10 seconds left, N.U.'s Lani Lawrence rebounded a Maine missed shot and her outlet pass found Tinsley who quickly moved upcourt. Tinsley then found Betsy Palecek wide open for the game deciding layup.
The frantic finish capped a game in which their were seven lead changes and five ties over the last 25 minutes. Tinsley's heroics earned her the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
1999 America East Player of the Year Jamie Cassidy led the Black Bears (23-6) with 27 points on 13 of 21 from the floor. The title game loss is the first for Maine in the last five championship games. Maine awaits the fate of the NCAA selection committee who will decide whether they will obtain an at-large bid to the tournament.
