NCAA Midwest Regional

Northeastern got the game it wanted - methodical and defensive - but couldn't pull the upset of 14th-ranked North Carolina, losing 64-55 in an NCAA Midwest Regional last night. Weber State shocked the Tar Heels in the men's tournament Thursday night, and the Carolina fans sat in silence as the Huskies led their fourth-seeded women's team with under five minutes left. But Chanel Wright's layup with 4:57 to go broke a 50-50 tie and gave UNC the lead for good. Down 55-51, 13th-seeded NU (22-8) came out of a timeout at the 1:32 mark and couldn't get the ball inbounds. LaQuanda Barksdale stole Beth Hanewald's pass and raced for a layup that gave the Heels a 57-51 lead with 1:28 showing. Barksdale stole the ball again on NU's next possession and hit another layup with 1:12 to go for a comfortable eight-point edge. Barksdale finished with a team-high 13 points. ``I thought we did a great job tonight with our defense,'' said NU coach Joy Malchodi, whose team held UNC to a season-low point total. ``Our defense has been our backbone all year, but quite frankly I didn't know if we could match up with their athleticism. But we did it and did it well. Our ballhandling and their athleticism finally hurt us at the end of the game.''

A critical call came after Wright (12 points) tied the game at 50 with a short shot at the 5:36 mark. Tinsley drove the lane and was whistled for her fourth foul after running into UNC's Nikki Teasley. The team's top scorer and catalyst all season, Tinsley was affected at both ends of the floor.

``It took away my aggressiveness,'' Tinsley said. ``I was afraid to attack, even on defense, the last four minutes of the game.''

Tinsley scored just nine points on 4-of-17 shooting, the first time in 26 games she failed to reach double figures. She was setting up fellow senior Betsy Palecek all night, however, and finished the game matching her career high with 10 assists. Palecek, who entered the game having made just 13 of her last 60 field goal tries, was 9-of-17 from the floor for a team-high 22 points. The Tar Heels picked up the defense late, holding the Huskies to just two field goals in the last six minutes. Palecek was the only NU player scoring, netting her team's last 11 points over the final 10 minutes. The Huskies established their tempo in the first half, taking a 27-23 lead into intermission against a team that came into the game averaging 83.5 points. It was the fewest points scored by UNC in a half this year. NU's man-to-man defense gave the Tar Heels problems from the outset as UNC made just one of its first 12 field goal attempts and finished the half shooting 31 percent (11-of-35).
