The Northeastern University women’s basketball team fell in overtime, 73-67, to Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies led at halftime for the first time this season with the score 32-23 heading into the locker room. Dartmouth came back though as the Huskies were outscored 36-27 in the second period and 14-8 in overtime.
Four Huskies scored in double figures led by Shaleyse Smallwood and Joanna Ausmann who each put up 13 points. Stefanie Hodell and Lucia Pablos both added 11 points. Smallwood handed out seven assists and Pablos had two. Hodell grabbed a career best and game-high 16 rebounds, pulling down eight on the offensive end. She was 4-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 at the free throw line. Ausmann played well defensively, adding a career-high three blocks and three steals. She also came up with six boards.
The Huskies’ defense limited Dartmouth to 25.0 percent shooting and one 3-pointer on 11 attempts in the first half to lead by nine at the half. The Big Green heating up in the second half and overtime though, connecting on 53.6 percent of its shots in the second half and 57.1 percent in overtime. NU’s shooting fell from 40.6 percent in the first half to 33.3 percent in the second as Dartmouth switched to a zone defense that limited the Huskies to 27 second half points. The Big Green had struggled at the free throw this season but helped ice the game at the line as Dartmouth was 4-of-6 in the second half and 5-of-6 in overtime.
The game was evenly played for the first eight minutes but with the score tied at nine, the Huskies mounted a 21-8 run to lead by 13 at the 2:44 mark in the first half. That was the largest lead of the game for either team as Dartmouth closed the gap to nine heading into the break. Ausmann scored all eleven of her points in the first half.
NU’s lead slowly shrunk in the second half as Dartmouth opened the half on an 18-8 run to claim the lead, 41-40, with 12:41 left in the second half. The Huskies fought back and after regaining the lead on a Lucia Pablos 3-pointer out of a timeout, NU extended its lead to as much as eight points. NU led until the 26-second mark when Dartmouth’s Koren Schram hit a runner in the lane to put the Big Green up by one. On the next possession, Hodell hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game and force overtime.
The Big Green started the overtime period with a 3-pointer from Schram and led the rest of the way. Schram finished with a game-high 26 points.
The Huskies are back in action at Solomon Court on Sat., Dec. 16 when they host Long Island at 1 p.m.
