Ashlee Feldman scored 18 points on 6-10 three-point shooting, and Lucia Pablos chipped in 12 as the women’s basketball team defeated Coppin State 69-65 in the Huskies’ season opening game. Northeastern shot 43 percent from the field and 54 percent from three-point range in the win. The Huskies return to action on Sunday as they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the second game of the UCF Knights Classic in Orlando at 11 a.m.
Northeastern trailed by two at halftime, and gradually built up its lead to as many as 13 points with six minutes to play thanks to some hot shooting. Leading 46-43, Feldman hit one of her six triples to give the Huskies a 49-43 edge. With the score 51-47, Feldman connected from long range again, and back-to-back jumpers by Shaleyse Smallwood and Jasmine Crew gave NU a 58-47 lead.
With a 63-50 lead and 6:24 remaining in the game, Coppin State began to gradually get back in the contest, whittling Northeastern’s lead down to 65-63 with 2:13 remaining thanks to a 13-2 run. That’s as close as Coppin State would get however, as Pablos hit a jumper to make the score 67-63 with 1:24 remaining, and NU played strong defense down the stretch to secure the win.
Sophomore Kendra Walton scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting, while freshman Jasmine Crew scored nine in her first collegiate game. Senior Stefanie Hodell led all Huskies with seven rebounds.
