| The Huskies lost a close, 77-74 contest to Georgia State Sunday afternoon at the Georgia State Sports Arena. The Huskies had the ball and trailed 74-72 with 18 seconds left, but a key turnover led to the Panthers squeaking by with the narrow win. Jasmine Crew led all Huskies with 14 points, while Brittany Hollins scored a game high 20 points.
With the Huskies trailing 74-67, Kendra Walton knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 74-70 with 27 seconds remaining. Shaleyse Smallwood then stole the inbounds pass and converted a lay-up, drawing a foul in the process to make the score 74-72 with 20 seconds remaining.
Smallwood missed her foul shot, but the ball went out of bounds and back to Northeastern. However after a timeout, a turnover gave the ball back to the Panthers, and a quick foul by Kim Carr put Hollins on the foul line. Hollins made one of two, and a basket by Stefanie Hodell made the score 75-74 with three seconds remaining. After getting fouled, Hollins made both her free throws with 1.2 seconds left, giving the Panthers a 77-74 lead.
With no timeouts left, Smallwood's desperation three from more than half court grazed the rim.
The second half was an entertaining affair that was filled with runs from both teams. Georgia State turned a 31-26 deficit early in the second half into a 38-37 lead with a 12-6 run. NU answered with a 12-3 run to take a 51-43 lead, but then the Panthers used a 9-0 run to take a 52-51 lead with 9:01 left.
NU then trailed 60-57, but a three from Walton tied the game with 6:04 to play, the last time the game was tied. In all, the lead changed hands six times in the second half.
In the first half, the Huskies turned a 22-14 deficit into a 27-22 lead with a 13-0 run. The Panthers scored four of the half's final six points to trail 29-26 heading into the locker rooms.
Five Huskies scored in double figures for the third time this year. Stefanie Hodell had a team high six rebounds, and Smallwood had a team high seven assists.
With the loss Northeastern falls to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in conference play. Georgia State improves to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the CAA.
The Huskies begins a three-game homestand Thursday night against Drexel. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
