| The Huskies staved off a late Drexel rally to earn a hard-fought 59-54 win over the Dragons Thursday night at Solomon Court. Jasmine Crew scored a team high 16 points on 7-12 shooting, while Shaleyse Smallwood had 12 points.
With NU leading 57-54 with seven seconds left after two Smallwood foul shots, Drexel’s Jasmina Rosseel’s three-pointer with two seconds left fell short. Strong defense by the Huskies forced Rosseel to get off a poor shot, and a terrific box out by Crew led to an over the back foul called on Delise Johnson, which led to two foul shots by India Thomas to ice the game.
The Huskies held a seemingly comfortable 51-41 lead with 4:14 to go after Smallwood knocked down a free throw. The Dragons though began to rally, and Niclole Hester got Drexel going with two foul shots. Minutes later, a basket by Gabriela Marginean made the score 51-49 Northeastern with 1:09 to play.
On the Huskies’ next possession, a clutch shot by Crew at the top of the key gave Northeastern a 53-49 lead with 42 seconds left. On Drexel’s next possession, Johnson made the first of two foul shots, missed the second, but the ball bounced out of bounds back to Drexel. Marginean scored again with 20 seconds left, making the score 53-52, but two key foul shots by Ashlee Feldman put NU back up three at 55-52 with 18 seconds to play.
A lay-up by Johnson with eight seconds left, and the ensuing foul and two free throws by Smallwood made the score 57-54.
Northeastern came out hot in the first half, shooting 52.4 percent from the field and led by seven, 26-19 at the break. The Huskies’ defense in the first half was particularly strong, as they held the Dragons to just 33.3 percent shooting in the first half. In the second half, NU opened up 10 point leads on three occasions, the last time being 51-41.
Stefanie Hodell was the team’s leading rebounder with eight, and Smallwood had a team high five assists to go along with her 12 points.
The win improves NU’s record to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in the CAA, while Drexel falls to 10-9 and 5-3 overall.
Northeastern returns to Solomon Court Sunday afternoon against Delaware at 2 p.m.
