| A potential game tying three-pointer by Lucia Pablos with seven seconds left rattled in and out as the Huskies fell just short against Delaware on Sunday afternoon, 57-52. The Huskies overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to tie the game, but Delaware scored nine of the game’s final 13 points to take the win. Shaleyse Smallwood and Pablos each had a team high 10 points.
With Delaware holding a 55-50 lead, Kendra Walton collected a Smallwood miss and scored with 33 seconds left, cutting NU’s deficit to 55-52. Jasmine Crew immediately fouled Kyle DeHaven, who scored a game high 13 points and had eight steals. DeHaven missed both shots, and Ashlee Feldman grabbed the rebound on the errant second shot, setting up NU’s final possession with 21 seconds left.
After a timeout, Crew started with the ball at the top of the key, and the ball eventually found its way to a wide open Pablos in the left hand corner, but her shot rattled in and out, dashing the Huskies’ chance at tying the game.
Northeastern fell behind by 11 at 45-34 with 10:26 remaining, but a 14-3 run tied the score at 48 with 4:15 to play. Pablos knocked down a three to make the score 45-39, and after three straight Delaware foul shots, NU scored nine points in a row on a basket by Kendra Walton, a three from Smallwood, two foul shots by Crew, and a lay-up by Pablos.
Courtney Irving gave the Blue Hens a 50-48 with two foul shots, then a triple from Vanessa Kabongo gave Delaware a 53-48 lead with 2:33 to play. Crew hit a jumper for the Huskies with 1:25 left, and Kabongo answered on the next possession with one minute to play.
The loss drops NU’s record to 6-13 overall and 1-8 in the CAA, while Delaware improves to 5-16 overall, and 4-5 in the CAA.
Northeastern concludes its three game home stand this Thursday against James Madison. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
