The Huskies hung tough early on against James Madison, but the Dukes proved to be too much in the end as they picked up an 80-58 win Thursday night at Solomon Court. Shaleyse Smallwood was the Huskies' leading scorer with 14 points.
Throughout much of the first half, the Huskies were step for step with James Madison. NU trailed 17-11 at the 10:39 mark, but a three-pointer by Smallwood brought the home side to within three points. The Huskies continued to hang tough over the next several minutes, and closed to within one point at 24-23 after another three-pointer by Smallwood with 6:57 left in the half.
After that basket however, the Dukes began to bare down, and ripped off a 13-0 run to close out the half, as the shots that kept NU in the game throughout much of the half stopped falling.
In the second half, NU shot 46.4 percent from the field, but James Madison was hot as well, shooting an even 50.0 percent from the floor.
Jasmine Crew and Ashlee Feldman, who went 4-8 from three-point range, each scored 12 points for Northeastern. James Madison's Tamera Young and Jennifer Brown both scored a game high 18 points.
The loss drops Northeastern's record to 1-9 in the CAA and 6-14 overall. The Dukes improve to 8-2 in conference play and 15-6 overall.
Northeastern returns to the court on Sunday against Hofstra at 12 p.m. from Hempstead, N.Y. The game can be seen live in the New York area on Fox SportsNet New York.
