| The Huskies won for the third time in four games by beating George Mason 65-56 Thursday night at Solomon Court. Shaleyse Smallwood scored a game high 26 points, while Kendra Walton had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Northeastern shot a terrific 27-31 from the foul line.
Northeastern's strong defense, another impressive offensive performance by Smallwood, and solid free throw shooting were enough to lift the Huskies to their fourth CAA win of the season, and second win in a row. The Huskies held the Patriots to just 35.5 percent shooting from the field, and the Huskies outrebounded the visitors 42-35.
Smallwood notched her fourth straight impressive offensive performance. The senior from Boston carried the Huskies at times, particularly in the first half where she scored 18 points on 6-8 shooting. Smallwood's 8-8 free throw shooting in the second half also helped the Huskies secure the win as George Mason fouled several times in the final minutes.
Northeastern led by as much as 13 points in the first half, and led by nine, 31-22 at halftime. George Mason though gradually chipped away at Northeastern's lead in the second half, cutting the Huskies' lead to four points on four separate occasions, the last time being 44-40 with 7:24 left in the game.
A jumper by Kim Carr put NU up six with 5:28 to play, and a basket by Lucia Pablos put the Huskies up 48-40 with 3:24 to play. A three-pointer by George Mason's Rashauna Hobbs made the score 52-45 with 1:24 to play, but Northeastern's excellent foul shooting down the stretch prevented the Patriots from coming back. The Huskies were 13-14 from the line in the final 1:24 of the game.
Pablos also registered double digits with 10 points, while Stefanie Hodell and Carr each had seven rebounds.
The win improves Northeastern's record to 4-10 in the CAA, and 9-15 overall.
The Huskies return to action Sunday afternoon for their second meeting of the season with Georgia State at 2 p.m.
