Senior Shaleyse Smallwood led a balanced Northeastern offense with 18 points as the Huskies earned their season best third straight win, and fourth in five games by beating Georgia State 67-61. Jasmine Crew added 17 points and Stefanie Hodell had 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who improve to 5-10 in the CAA and 10-15 overall.
Defense has been the catalyst for Northeastern during its winning streak and the Huskies were once again opportunistic, forcing Georgia State into 19 turnovers and scoring 21 points off those turnovers. Northeastern was also strong on the boards, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds on the afternoon.
Northeastern trailed 28-23 at halftime after shooting just 28.1 percent from the field in the first half. The Huskies though started the second half hot, and used a 10-3 run over the first 3:30 of the half to take a 33-31 lead.
The Panthers answered with an 11-3 run of their own to take a 42-36 lead, but the Huskies quickly came back. Sparked by their defense which forced Georgia State into turnovers on five straight possessions, Northeastern scored 10 straight points to take a 46-42 lead.
The Panthers scored four points in a row to tie the game, but a basket by Crew put NU in front for good at 48-46 with 8:57 to play.
Georgia State got to within 58-55 with 2:03 remaining after a three-pointer by Traci Haltiwanger, but clutch foul shooting down the stretch by Lucia Pablos and Smallwood sealed the win for the Huskies.
Pablos added 12 points for Northeastern while Ashlee Feldman chipped in 11. Hodell had a good all-around game with five assists and four steals in addition to her 11 rebounds.
The Huskies return to the floor Thursday night in Wilmington, N.C. against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
