Shaleyse Smallwood's potential game winning three-pointer as time expired fell just short as the Huskies lost a 51-50 heartbreaker to VCU Friday afternoon in the CAA quarterfinals. The Huskies had a 50-49 lead after Kendra Walton scored with 11 seconds left, but VCU's Kita Waller gave VCU the lead with 3.3 seconds left. Stefanie Hodell gave an inspired performance with 13 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double. The Huskies finish the season 14-16 overall.

Krystal Vaughn gave the Rams a 49-48 lead on a lay-up with 50.8 seconds left. With the ball, Northeastern whittled the clock down and went up by one with 11 seconds remaining on Walton's lay-up on an assist by Pablos. VCU called a timeout after crossing half-court with six seconds left, and after the timeout, Waller scored on an open drive to the basket with 3.3 seconds left.

Northeastern then burned its final timeout and had the ball on its own baseline. The Huskies got the ball across halfcourt, and a foul was called on Vaughn with just 2.3 seconds left. Walton got the ball off the inbounds and passed to Smallwood, whose deep three as time expired missed.

The Huskies trailed 41-31, but used a 13-2 run that was punctuated by an Ashlee Feldman three-point play to take a 46-45 lead. The team's traded the lead twice more until Vaughn' s lay-up with 50.8 seconds left gave VCU the 49-48 lead.

Both teams struggled to find any offensive continuity over the first nine plus minutes of the first half, but both started to find their rhythms around the 10 minute mark. The Huskies trailed 12-7 at the 10:50 mark, but got baskets from Smallwood and Kim Carr to get NU within one point.

With VCU leading 12-11, the Rams scored six straight points to take an 18-11 lead. Lucia Pablos broke the Rams' run with a lay-up and started a 6-1 run for the Huskies that got them to within 19-17. After VCU scored four straight points, Pablos gave a beautiful feed to Hodell for a basket, then made a nice move on a drive to the basket to score herself.

Walton scored with 25 seconds left in the half to tie the score at 23, but Radoslava Bachvarova's three-pointer from the left-hand elbow with seven seconds left gave the Rams a 26-23 lead at halftime.
