Women's crew hands out yearly awards May 23, 2007 Boston, MAThe women’s crew team has announced the winners of the team’s yearly awards for the 2006-07 season as selected by the team, as well as members of first and second team All-New England as selected by the College Rowing Coaches Association. Katherine Glessner was named team MVP, and Kelly Crawford was voted Outstanding Varsity Competitor. Meredith Sparano was voted by her teammates as the winner of the Jeanne Rowlands Inspirational Award.
Glessner, a junior from Seattle, Wash., rowed the 7 seat in the varsity eight. She was named Outstanding Oarswoman last season. In addition to being named team MVP, Glessner was selected first-team All-New England by the CRCA. Rachel Stephenson, of Wyckoff, N.J., was named second-team All-New England.
Crawford, of Andover, Mass., rowed the 5 seat in the varsity eight this season for the Huskies, who finished 10-3 and placed 6th at the Eastern Sprints.
Sparano, of Paoli, Penn., was voted by her teammates as the winner of the Jeanne Rowlands Inspirational Award for the second straight season. She is only the second Northeastern rower to win the award twice in a row, the first being NU Hall of Famer Elena Menegakis in 1997 and 1998.
The novice squad also handed out yearly awards, announcing Jessica Palmer (Chichester, N.H.) for the Rowlands Inspirational Award and Heather Zeh (Sacramento, Calif.) as its outstanding competitor.
The following members of the rowing team were named national scholar-athletes by the CRCA, completing the academic year with a GPA of 3.5 or better: Sparano (3.93); Sophie Barkan (3.73); Ashley Griffeth (3.63); Lauren Kava (3.63); Jillise Ketcham (3.83); Emily Ortez (3.56); Svenja Sanders (3.85); Pia Zubrowski (3.80).
