Radcliffe Women's Crew won its ninth straight Rowlands Cup against the Huskies, MIT and BC, and NU defeated BU in the first-ever Beanpot of women's rowing Saturday. The Cliffies rode nearly a three-length lead at the end to a final time of 6:35.7, earning the victory over second-place NU.
It became a two-boat race from the settle through the first 500, between Radcliffe and NU. The two remained within a length and-a-half of each other, with open water separating the rest of the field, until the final 500 where Radcliffe pulled away.
Radcliffe had won the previous four Rowlands Cup races by an average margin of 11.5 seconds. They fell short of the fastest time in the history of the race, 6:34.6 by Radcliffe in 1999, by 1.1 seconds.
NU, the only other team that has competed in every Rowlands Cup since 1980, now trails the all-time series in the Rowlands Cup 20-4 to Radcliffe, and hasn't won since 1998.
Radcliffe took first in every race except the Varsity 4B, in which they lost by 2.6 seconds to BU.
The Huskies defeated BU for the first time since 1999. The Terriers still own a 19-7 all-time record against NU.
The Beanpot is expected to become an annual event, with the Rowlands Cup and annual BU/NU race as part of it.
All crews will take next weekend off. The Huskies will now prepare for the Eastern Sprints, which will take place on Sunday, May 13, at the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Huskies have finished 8th in each of the last two sprints.
